Snook fishing
in Sanibel.
Sanibel offers two genuinely different snook fisheries, and both are worth fishing. The summer beach run produces some of the biggest snook of the year in clear, sight-castable water. Then there's the J.N. "Ding" Darling National Wildlife Refuge — a protected 6,400-acre estuary on the back side of the island that holds resident snook year-round, with the serenity and wildlife viewing that makes it a bucket-list trip even without the fishing.
Snook fishing in Sanibel, Florida offers two distinct fisheries. Summer brings the beach run — large females cruising the surf line in gin-clear water. The J.N. "Ding" Darling National Wildlife Refuge on the back side of the island holds snook year-round in its no-motor zones and culvert outflows. Fly anglers use an 8-weight with baitfish patterns. RescueFly Charters guides both fisheries from our Pine Island port.

Snook on the fly.
On the Gulf beach in summer, it's sight-casting: we idle the wash, spot cruising singles and pairs, and present small white patterns (Schminnow, Gurglers) ahead of the lead fish. In the Ding Darling backcountry, the tactics flip — we work the culvert outflows where falling tides flush bait out of the refuge proper, and the snook stage in the faster water to intercept. Both fisheries reward patience over volume of casts.
Why Sanibel for snook?
Sanibel's combination is rare: a true clear-water summer beach fishery AND a massive protected estuary fishery in one island. The Ding Darling Refuge has strict conservation rules that have kept the habitat pristine for decades — dense mangroves, healthy oyster beds, unfished pockets you can only reach by shallow-draft skiff. For an angler who wants both the thrill of sight-casting a 36-inch snook in the surf AND a quiet, technical backcountry day, Sanibel delivers both.
Gulf Coast snook have a 28–33 inch slot limit and harvest seasons set by the state. RescueFly Charters is a catch-and-release operation for snook regardless of season — we want these fish here for the next generation.

About snook fishing in Sanibel.
- Can you fish for snook in the Ding Darling Refuge?
- Yes — parts of the refuge are open to rod-and-reel fishing, with no-motor zones that reward push-pole skiffs. The culvert outflows are the key feature — they flush bait out of the refuge on falling tides and stage snook in ambush position. It's quiet, wild, and productive.
- When is the Sanibel beach snook run?
- June through August is the heart of it. The pre-spawn females stack along the Gulf-side beaches in clear water from early June, with the biggest bite window in the first two hours of morning light before boat traffic builds.
- Are there snook on Sanibel in winter?
- Yes — in the refuge and in the deeper tannin-warm pockets behind the island. Sanibel is a little more exposed to cold fronts than Matlacha Pass, so the winter fishery isn't as reliable, but the refuge water stays warm enough to hold fish through most cold snaps.
