Snook fishing
in Fort Myers Beach.
Fort Myers Beach snook fishing is all about Estero Bay. The bay is a maze of mangrove islands, oyster bars, and creek mouths that hold resident snook year-round. Matanzas Pass on the north end and Big Carlos Pass on the south bookend it with deeper water. In winter, the bay's dark mudflats soak up solar heat fast — a thermal refuge that keeps fish active when colder water shuts down elsewhere.
Snook fishing in Fort Myers Beach, Florida centers on Estero Bay — a shallow, mangrove-rimmed estuary behind Estero Island — plus Matanzas Pass on the north end of the island and the dock-light fishery along the beach. Snook on the fly.
Estero Bay snook fishing is precision casting into mangrove cover. We pole the shorelines, skip weedless baitfish patterns tight to the roots, and strip them slow along the shadow line. On the tide changes, we work Matanzas Pass and the creek mouths where bait gets flushed through. Night fishing the dock lights is a different game entirely — pattern the bait, position the cast so the fly drifts naturally through the light edge, and hold on.
Why Fort Myers Beach for snook?
Estero Bay is a classic Florida backcountry snook fishery — shallow, mangrove-rich, and full of the dark bottom that absorbs solar heat fastest. That thermal property is the key: after cold fronts that push snook off exposed Gulf water, Estero Bay stays warm enough to hold fish. Combine that with two passes (Matanzas and Big Carlos) providing structure and bait flow, and a dense dock-light fishery along the beach, and you have a snook fishery that produces every month of the year.
Gulf Coast snook have a 28–33 inch slot limit and harvest seasons set by the state. RescueFly Charters is a catch-and-release operation for snook regardless of season — we want these fish here for the next generation.

About snook fishing in Fort Myers Beach.
- Where is the best snook fishing near Fort Myers Beach?
- Estero Bay — the shallow estuary on the back side of Estero Island. Matanzas Pass on the north end of the island is also a reliable spot for structure-oriented fish. Night fishing the dock lights along the beach gets productive year-round.
- Is Estero Bay good for fly fishing?
- Yes — the mangrove-edge fishery is classic fly water. Short accurate casts, weedless patterns, slow retrieves. The bay is protected from most Gulf wind, which makes it fishable when the outside is blown out.
- Can you snook fish Fort Myers Beach in winter?
- Yes — Estero Bay's dark mudflats are a genuine thermal refuge. After cold fronts, snook tuck into the warmer pockets of the bay and hold through the cold snap. Winter snook fishing here is more reliable than on exposed Gulf-side water.
