Redfish fishing
in Cape Coral.

For redfish, Cape Coral is a launch point. The city itself doesn't hold many reds in the canals, but the western edge of the city borders Matlacha Pass — and the flats inside and around the pass are prime redfish water. Add the Caloosahatchee River mouth to the south for transitional brackish-water fishing, and a Cape Coral day turns into a classic Pine Island Sound redfish day.

Quick Answer

Redfish fishing in Cape Coral, Florida is primarily on the west side, where the city borders Matlacha Pass — one of the most productive redfish flats systems in Pine Island Sound. The Caloosahatchee River mouth adds mangrove-shoreline fishing for transitional salinity reds. Peak runs late summer through winter. Fly anglers use an 8-weight. RescueFly Charters poles these flats from a Beavertail Mosquito.

How We Fish

Redfish on the fly.

We run west from Cape Coral into Matlacha Pass and pole the flats silently, looking for tails, wakes, and bronze flashes. The Matlacha-side flats are skinny, often under two feet, with turtle grass and oyster-bar structure. Crab and shrimp patterns on fly; gold spoons and soft plastics on spin. At the Caloosahatchee mouth, mangrove shoreline with transitional salinity holds different fish — more aggressive, less pressured.

Why Cape Coral for reds?

Cape Coral's western border is Matlacha Pass — which means Cape Coral is effectively a ten-minute run from one of the best flats redfish fisheries in Florida. The Caloosahatchee mouth also plays in: brackish water where reds move between pure-salt Sound water and lower-salinity river water depending on rainfall. That variation creates unpredictable, often explosive fishing where aggressive fish hunt disoriented bait.

Florida Regulations

Redfish in Florida have an 18–27 inch slot limit and a one-fish daily bag with seasonal closures on the Gulf Coast. RescueFly Charters runs primarily catch-and-release for reds — we release bull reds (36+ inches) every fall.

Common Questions

About redfish fishing in Cape Coral.

Are there redfish in the Cape Coral canals?
Occasionally, but it's not a primary fishery. For reliable redfish out of Cape Coral, we run to the Matlacha Pass flats on the west side of the city — ten minutes away and world-class habitat.
Best tide for Cape Coral area redfish?
Low tide on the Matlacha-side flats for tailing fish. Moving water at the Caloosahatchee mouth for aggressive cruisers. Both produce — we pick the tide that fits the light window and the wind.
What's the fishery at the Caloosahatchee River mouth?
Mangrove shoreline with transitional salinity — where the river water meets San Carlos Bay. Reds here are often more aggressive because the bait is disoriented by the salinity change. Good on the falling tide when the river is flushing.
